Don’t Lie to Yourself
How often has anyone told you to be yourself? Do you fear who you are or are you comfortable in your own skin? The choice of who we are is based on a great many factors. Some of those factors come from within us, some come from society, and others come from our home life. We are the only person who can tell us who we are.
Be true to yourself. Admit who you are to yourself before admitting it to others. Homosexuality is often looked at with reserve. There are quite a few people who don’t understand and others who refuse to even discuss the issue. The point is if you are not honest with yourself no matter your sexual being, you won’t be happy.
Heterosexuals lie to themselves about who they are. They are afraid to show who they are sometimes. This may not be in the same way as homosexuality, but it is true. Everyone lies to themselves about who they are at one point or another. Teenagers trying to decide who they are often have trouble defining themselves. Society makes it difficult for a homosexual individual to be truthful.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when you are trying to be true to yourself. Homosexuality has been around for thousands of years. It is only in the last two hundred or less years we have looked towards homosexuals unfavorably. Everyone is an individual and deserves to be who they are. No one should have to hide. Does this mean it doesn’t happen? No often homosexuals hide from others who they really are.
This is a disservice to you and to others. First everyone craves happiness. If you can’t find a way to be yourself then you will not be truly happy. Second there are a lot of people who just want friends. They may be outcasts because of their family, or their behaviors if you hide from everyone you won’t have any friends. Family isn’t always supportive of the decisions we make, but when you reach a certain age what they want shouldn’t matter as much as your happiness, as being yourself.
There are many theories about homosexuality and its basis. Some offer a genetic reason, others say it has nothing to do with genetics. Some even call it a psychological disorder. We still don’t know who is right or who is wrong. In my mind it doesn’t matter the cause. Homosexuality harms no one. It’s not like dementia where the individual may light something on fire because they forgot they turned the stove on. Homosexuality may be genetic, but it isn’t a defect. It’s not some terrible disease a person suffers from that will ultimately kill them or cause a limit to the jobs the person is capable of doing.
Being true to your self is the most important factor to happiness in life. It doesn’t matter who you are homosexual or heterosexual life can only lead to being fun and enjoyable if you know who you are as a person.
