Think of smoking as a horrible murderous monster (because it is!) When you smoke a cigarette you are killing yourself and it is even worse if kids do it. Kids start smoking because they think its cool. Smoking is not cool smoking is disgusting! Every day in Britain, about 300 people die early because of smoking. Smoking causes many diseases like lung cancer, bronchitis and coronary heart disease.
Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals many of them are harmful to the body.
The three most harmful ingredients in cigarette smoke are nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar.
CARBON MONOXIDE is a poisonous gas. Healthy blood carries lots of oxygen. In a smoker’s blood some of it is replaced by carbon monoxide (the same gas as you get from car exhausts). This means the blood can’t do its job properly and this can lead to heart disease and other health problems.
NICOTINE is an addictive drug. This means that your body starts to need it. When someone smokes a cigarette, the nicotine goes straight into the bloodstream. Nicotine affects the body in many ways but one is that it makes the heart beat faster than it should and puts strain on it.
TAR is a black, sticky liquid like that used in road surfacing. You can’t see tar in cigarette smoke but in the lungs the tiny specks join together to form a black coating. Many of the substances in tar damage the lungs, causing breathing problems and often cancer.
Passive smoking is when kids breathe in other peoples cigarettes this is also harmful. This means that people who smoke are being selfish because they are making other people unwell because of it.
What if I already smoke?
If you already smoke you should look for help. If you know are friend who smokes tell him or her how bad it is for them, you’ll be saving their life.
